Ladies (or gentlemen too)

Where can I find gyne-lotrimin?? I've looked high and low and it's so hard to find, and I'd rather not pay $30+ for overnight shipping online. Thanks.

Free with student ID

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 10:26 PM
I have a friend visiting this weekend. We are both students and both with not very much money. I know you can get into the MoMa free with a student ID but what other places are free with a student ID? If there is some sort of master list that would be even better.

Also, I keep meaning to ask this in general here but what are your favorite really cheap and really good restaurants? Last time he came to NYC I took my friend to Baogette which was great and I am wondering about other places downtown and uptown. (I live uptown but we will probably be spending most of our time downtown. Neither of us are too picky about food.) Thanks.
Heyhey.

I know there are a few freelancers & designers & lawyers in this comm, since NYC is a good base for all that sort of stuff, so I am hoping someone here can give me some advice, or can point me to somewhere that can.

I have a difficult client, and they have decided to terminate the contract, which is fine, because, again, difficult.

I am wondering: 1., how much I am allowed to charge them, and 2., what work I should send them (I have the next stage of designs ready, but they have stated they don't want to go farther than the last stage).

Basically, I had them on a flat rate payment plan. They've paid 2 of 3 payments, and I've done a significant amount of work since the last invoice.

My contract says I am to receive the greatest of any advance payment, a portion of a prorated payment, or an hourly amount for the work done. Hourly would be the greatest of the 3 options, but it would also be over the amount they have left to pay, which would make it over the flat rate they were given in the proposal.

So how much do I charge?

Again, any advice you can give me, or if you can point me in the way of any resources to answer this question would be great. I'm googling and searching all the sites I know, but I'm only finding info on if the designer terminates the contract.

Dudes 35-45 who like football

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 6:56 PM
Hey guys. I posted here a few months about a commercial I was working on and ago and got a great response -- thanks! Sorry if I didn't respond to you, the client was looking for a very specific thing and I had to be overly nitpicky. Anyway! I'm writing because I'm now working on another commercial. The client is very into finding "real guys"--meaning, you know, regular dudes who aren't actors or models, who might want to be in a commercial for some extra $ and some fun. What I need is this:

-Guys 35-45 years old
-At least 5'10"
-Must love football
-Must not be in any actors unions (SAG, AFTRA, Equity)
-Must not have an agent or manager who they must go through for work
-Must be willing to take their shirt off (the commercial takes place in the shower, no nudity or anything crazy)

It will pay $500 for 1 day of work. We're having auditions this week and next. Maybe you know a guy who fits this description who's unemployed -- or employed and willing to take off a day to make $500? Tell them to email me at SuperFanCasting@gmail.com! Here's a CL link to our ad: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/tfr/1537024183.html

Thank you again ladies and gents.

Yerba Maté

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 5:01 PM
Hi folks! OK, what is everyone's opinion on the best place to buy yerba maté? I already have the gourd and the straw; all I need is the tea itself. I came back from Buenos Aires and was able to buy the gourd and straw, but didn't want to bother with bringing the tea through customs/immigration.

Thanks!

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 12:29 PM

What to do...

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 11:27 PM
This is another one of those "what to do in New York..." questions, but mine is a little more complicated. I mean, at least I think it's complicated.

My mother is coming out here for a week at the end of January. She's been here once before, so she knows that NY means lots of walking. But it's cold outside, and she has arthritis in her hips, so we want activities that are indoors/don't involve lots of walking. Like, a museum is one thing, and we'll probably hit a few of them, but any sort of traditional tourist treks are out. Although she's from a much colder place than here and can therefore put up with more outdoor-stuff than most. But no treks. Brooklyn Bridge is not gonna happen.

Additionally, she's almost totally deaf, so traditional not-walking things like concerts and Broadway and all that are out. To make things even worse, she doesn't sign, so even events with interpreters handy don't fly. She gets by strictly lip-reading.

She lives in a small town (small like, "wow, it's so nice to have sushi! You can't get anything like this at home!" --Seriously.) She is up for a certain amount of adventure--I took her to a hookah bar last time she was here; she'd never heard of such a thing before and was a wee bit wary, but ended up adoring it and it's back on the to-do list this time around, for example. She likes crafts, she wants to go to museums, she wants to see shit she can't see in her freakishly small town, and is more than willing to go along with whatever half-baked madness I concoct. But I gotta concoct it first. Help?

Any ideas?

An odd query...

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 9:10 PM
...even by this group's standards.

Does anyone know where I can get a large number of blank wooden square tiles, like Scrabble tiles but blank? And/or a large quantity of Scrabble tiles of the letter Q? Thanks!

copywriting

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
What qualifications are ideal to make a decent amount of money as a copywriter in this town? (I'd be happy with $25,000 a year).

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Lit and have taken courses in copywriting. I've also had a few expository works published, one in a book, another in an online zine. I *may* have a book deal in the works.
Hey.

The room in my apt is available. Again.

My roommate is unable to continue paying rent, so she's leaving. If you or someone you know is looking for a place, check this fing housing ad out!

$700. That's not too bad. )

Comment here, or shoot me an email via the original clist ad: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/roo/1538349026.html (it's the same as this whole mess, but it has pictures).

Thanks.

Dry cleaners

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 10:03 AM
I asked on Saturday if I could pick up my clothes on Tuesday and was told "No problem!" Just now I was told they're not ready and now I have to make a 2nd trip. I have a work schedule that makes weekday free time very precious and this is the 2nd time this has happened.

If I request a discount for my trouble, will they knock a few bucks off my bill or will they laugh in my face?
My partner and I are going to Boston for Arisia (a science fiction convention) and could really use a ride up, since we'll be doing a lot of cooking at a friend's place in Chestnut Hill first and need to bring a bunch of equipment with us. If you happen to be going that way on Sunday the 10th and have room in your car for two people and lots of stuff, please let me know! We're happy to cover gas and tolls and provide travel snacks.

(Yes, I know all the dangers of ridesharing; there will be lots and lots of background-checking and talking beforehand and friends with our phone numbers and routes etc.)

Suggestions for group dinner

  • Jan. 4th, 2010 at 9:15 PM
My boss wants to take our office out for a post-holiday celebration. A dinner, that is. We're only 12 at the office, but she wants to find us a place "nice" (around $30-40 a person), with group seating. We suggested Carmine's but she would like something nicer.
One of my colleagues is highly allergic to seafood, so tapas isn't an option (as soon as she smells seafood she needs to run out of the restaurant).

Do you guys happen to know of a good restaurant, where you can eat with a group on a regular week night, that's nice and serves good food?

ANY ideas are welcome. Our dinner is supposed to take place next week...

thanks, y'all! I know you never let me down...

Does anyone know any area that has a lot of cafe's around? Or any place at all that is hiring?

My boyfriend finished up school last month and has been looking for work since. He has applied to hundreds of "real" college graduate type jobs via craigslist and various career building webpages. He has heard nothing back.

He has also applied to dozens of cafe and other jobs on craigslist, also with nothing coming through.

He has walked the streets day after day going to places and most say "apply on our webpage" and refuses to take his resume in person. He goes online and gets no response.

Does anyone know anyone that is hiring anywhere at all? He has a BA in Psychology from City College and a BA in Sociology from University of Connecticut. He has managed a coffee shop in Brooklyn and has about 6-8 years of experience working in various coffee shops both in Manhattan and in CT. He has also worked at GNC and did really well selling things there (no GNCs seem to be hiring though, or vitamin shops, that he has found). He's really looking for anything at all. Any leads would be appreciated, or any area that is high in concentration with cafes where he could walk around for a day handing out resumes would be great.

He is very responsible, outgoing, and gets along great with others.

Until then he'll keep up with craigslist and looking online. Thanks so much for any help!

AlAnon for a friend....

  • Jan. 4th, 2010 at 1:24 AM
Hey... So someone close to me has been abusing alcohol for a while. I want to be supportive, and so far none of my efforts have helped. My therapist suggested I visit AlAnon to try to find out more and be more helpful to my friend. Has anyone done this? What can I expect? Any recommended locations? I live on the east side if this helps.

Many thanks.

Vegan breakfast tomorrow?

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 12:57 PM
I'm looking for a restaurant to get a vegan breakfast at tomorrow morning (pancakes and whatnot), preferably on the Upper West Side or around Penn Station. I know of a few vegan restaurants that serve breakfast, but they only have it on the weekends (Blossom...mmm). Thank you!

Best place to buy a wallet?

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 9:47 PM
So I've recently accepted the fact that my trusty ole' wallet is falling apart. The problem is, I'm very particular about my wallet and ideally I'd probably want to get the same one again (though I don't remember what brand/model this is, nor where I even bought it).

Therefore I ask everyone here... where's the best place to buy a wallet? I know there's a store dedicated just to bags (The Bag House), where I bought my messenger bag about ten years ago that I still use all the time, so is there some kind of "Wallet House" with hundreds of types of wallets? I want somewhere with a really large selection. I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a wallet made out of crocodile or anything ridiculous like that, but I am willing to pay for something that'll last years and years.

Thanks.

Will P-Diddy still pay for my cab fare?!

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 5:11 PM
Hey everyone,

On New Years Eve, I was stumbling walking around Union Square, and I was given a $15 Debit Card for no reason. At the time, I wasn't sure if it was some fake card for viral marketing or just weirdos giving out free debit cards, but after I remembered that I had it today, I did some googling and found that P-Diddy was offering to pay for my cab fare on New Years Eve.

I didn't take a cab on New Years Eve (which I'm regretting now that I know what this debit card is for), but since I still have it, my questions are:

1. Is it still valid for a single cab fare?
2. If it is still valid, can I use it on anything else, or does it only work for cab fare?

Couldn't find the answer anywhere in the googleverse, but I'm hoping you can help. Hope your New Year celebrations were a good start to a great year.

good gay club?

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
my birthday is at the end of the month and i'd like to find a good gay club that i can invite a lot of friends to without feeling cramped or bored. i'm looking for a place that has reasonably priced drinks, good dancing and music, but also lounge areas for those who want to relax. low or no cover would be best.

rush is absolutely out, it's disgusting, overpriced and filled with nyc's worst.
splash feels like a tourist haunt, in a bad way, plus it's cover is ridiculous and the bar staff are terrible.
i haven't been to mr. black in ages but always had fun when i went before. it just moves around so often that i have no idea where it is or if it'll be there at the end of january.
i hate the ritz.

for those who have been out in london, g-a-y late is along the lines of what i'm thinking, but i just don't know if this exists in new york.

any other suggestions are very much welcome.

thanks!

Delivery and tipping

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 11:59 AM
Ok here's the scenario(i was standin' at the corner this one time...). I ordered food. I called 45 minutes later, "the guys are slow cause they're on bikes and its windy". Benefit of the doubt. An hour and a half later, the food was never sent out. I don't know if it was never given it to someone to deliver or who ever was responsible for delivering it did not pick to deliver. SO question is, should I tip the delivery person? I'm a bit annoyed here, but also people get aweful tips sometimes. Sometimes not at all.
